20,000 Apply for 877 Hyundai Plant Jobs

Sonatax-wide-community
Nearly 20,000 people have applied so far for the 877 new jobs at Hyundai's plant in Montgomery, Ala., where it is adding a new production shift. And the applications are still coming.

"It just continues to grow," said Scott Gordy of Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama's human resources department.

The deadline to apply is this Saturday, but Hyundai was so overwhelmed by the initial response that they suspended the application process on May 18 because of the high volume. Last week, Hyundai issued a statement saying that it would reopen the application process through June 2 but warned that anyone who applies after May 18 may not have time to be processed. Gordy said later applicants will be seen "as needed" for future hires.

Prospects are being told to apply at the website for Hyundai hiring partner Alabama Industrial Development Training, which filters all applicants into a database and schedules the strongest candidates for assessments. Of the 18,500 applicants who were in the system by May 22, an estimated 6,000 to 7,000 will make it to the assessment stage. Some get that chance immediately, while others are banked to be assessed later.

As the training center works to sift through the thousands of job-seekers, officials at Hyundai are working to assess those top choices, even if it means working extra hours.

On May 14, Hyundai started screening potential workers from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week. During the one-and-a-half-hour screening, applicants take a multiple choice test, then meet with two Hyundai team members and a contracted worker for a short interview. The training center processes about 200 people a day.

"We've seen about 1,500 already," Gordy said Tuesday. "I've been very pleased and excited to see the people coming through. They're very eager about this opportunity. We are looking for the best of the best in the area." Those who make it past the screening then return for a hands-on assessment, going through a six-hour training course.
"They're shown a very simple process for assembling something," said Hyundai spokesman Robert Burns. "It tells us that they read the instructions, they followed instructions, and they put the thing together right. It won't be a Sonata or an Elantra, it'll just be simple instructions."

Hyundai will then send the top remaining candidates through a pre-employment screening process and offer them a job.
Most of the hiring should be finished by mid-July, but the work doesn't end there. The new employees must be trained, pairing up with veteran Hyundai workers. That's all before the third shift starts rolling.

"On the HR side, it's just monumental – for this timeframe, for that many people," Gordy said. "But it's also very important for our production staff, as they're having to bring in this entire shift, get them trained with experienced workers and then split out into three shifts. It's a major undertaking."

The third shift will begin formal training in August with the goal of full three-shift production by Sept. 4.
"There'll be a transition period in August to get to that point," Burns said.

Gordy worked with AIDT during the facility's initial hiring process before its 2005 opening, but he said the timeframe makes the current process different.

"The first time, we had a lot of time to deal with everything," he said. "We had a year-and-a-half to two years to bring in 1,000 people, so everything was planned and moved methodically. "

2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Tops Consumer Award’s Hybrid Category

Sonata_hybrid
Winners of this year’s Autobytel & AutoPacific Consumer Awards have been released and the top-rated hybrid car winner is the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.

This is the 16th edition of this annual Vehicle Satisfaction Awards.

Based solely on input from actual owners—more than 75,000 of them—taken during the first quarter of the year, AutoPacific’s 2012 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSAs) provide a unique look at which vehicles provide the most satisfying overall ownership experience. Many other awards focus solely on specific aspects of that experience, or the subjective opinions of the media, and can’t identify the vehicles that really satisfy real drivers.

For example, when looking at the top-rated hybrid car in this year’s VSAs, the winner wasn’t the one with the absolute highest mpg ratings. Yes, the main reason people buy hybrids is to save on fuel costs, but, at this stage in the game, people expect that plus all the benefits found in a traditionally powered vehicle, too. And that’s exactly what they get in this year’s highest-rated hybrid car, the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.

Part of the equation is Hyundai’s satisfying price tag of $25,850 that is the lowest MSRP of any hybrid mid-size sedan on the market.

The Sonata Hybrid also delivers the highest net horsepower in its class, and, thanks to Hyundai’s “Blue Drive” hybrid powertrain, EPA marks of up to 35 mpg city/40 mpg highway/37 mpg combined. Another Blue Drive benefit comes from the system’s advanced battery technology that relies on polymer gel electrolytes instead of the typical nickel-metal hydride setup. In plain English, the result is a battery that is 25 percent lighter, takes up 40 percent less space, delivers 10 percent better efficiency and can maintain available power for 1.7 times longer than traditional hybrid batteries.

An impressive list of standard content also contributed to the vehicle’s recognition as the highest-rated hybrid car in the 2012 VSAs.

Competitors included the Toyota Camry Hybrid, which was completely redesigned for the 2012 model year, as well as two luxury choices: The Buick LaCrosse eAssist and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The highest-rated dedicated hybrid was the Lexus CT 200h, which tied the Camry Hybrid for second place in the segment.

The most satisfying EV was the Chevrolet Volt, coming in just a few points behind the Buick and Lincoln.

More information on Hyundai’s win can be found here.

In the Hybrid SUV category, the 2012 Lexus RX 450h was named the top-rated hybrid truck. Showing the diversity of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive system, all of the entrants in the hybrid truck category used this advanced technology, but while the 2012 Lexus RX 450h.

Hyundai's '12 Equus narrows gap on the luxury car competition at a lower price

20120523151137_1
The 2012 Hyundai Equus is proof of the Korean automaker's ambitions and the long path it is willing to take to become a respected brand.

A luxury sedan with a 10-foot-long wheelbase might seem out of place for an automaker that entered the U.S. market 26 years ago with inexpensive, shoddy, little cars. But Hyundai has come a long way from its cut-rate beginnings. It has forged a reputation for producing popular, quality compact and mid-size cars.

The fact that Hyundai also builds a spacious, quiet and powerful luxury sedan shouldn't be all that surprising.

The two versions — Signature and Ultimate models — I drove were mistaken for Mercedes-Benz. A guy in a parking lot asked if one was a Lexus. This is exactly what Hyundai had in mind, even if Equus isn't as refined as the competition — yet.

Hyundai's flagship doesn't adhere to the striking design motif established by its recently introduced models. Instead, the Equus interprets luxury, at least in part, by looking back rather than forward. The Equus got an engine upgrade the old-fashioned way — to a larger V-8 — at a time when other carmakers are turbocharging V-6 engines.

The 5-liter engine produces 429 horsepower; that's 44 more than last year's 4.6-liter V-8 powertrain. Hyundai sells so many small cars that the automaker has plenty of room under government fleet fuel economy guidelines to build a vehicle for consumers who can afford to ignore EPA estimates of 15 mpg city and 23 highway.

This is about giving luxury buyers what they want. Equus has ashtrays. Last time I saw ashtrays they were in a 2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo S with a $194,000 price tag.

Drive a German luxury vehicle and there will be no questions asked. Arrive in anything else and you will be explaining your brand loyalty or how you are a value shopper or how you just prefer American cars. Certainly, the person who is willing to spend up to $65,750 on a Hyundai luxury sedan is also willing to argue with you about his choices.

Bargain luxury

The Equus comes with electronically controlled dampers and air suspension, meaning it can switch from a pillowy ride to something more aggressive by simply shifting past "D" to "S." The big car becomes pleasingly nimble. The automatic transmission shifts at higher rpm. Shock absorption, steering rates and compensation for under steer and over steer all are subject to predictive analysis of data from the car's electronic stability and traction controls. It helps you drive faster safely.

The overall performance is not as sophisticated as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series, Audi A8 or Lexus LS, which Hyundai sees as competition, but it's getting closer. And for less money.

The Equus Signature costs $58,750. The leather and wood-trimmed interior is extremely quiet. The driver's seat is heated, cooled and has 12 power adjustments, plus a massager. The front passenger seat is heated and cooled and has 10 power adjustments. The steering wheel is wood and leather and heated. Rear seats are heated, and have power reclining adjustments.

A center control panel is logical and easy to operate. The standard 608-watt surround-sound audio system has 17 speakers. Equus even plays its own little theme song every time you get in the car. The standard navigation system is displayed on a large center screen that also controls the Bluetooth hands-free cell phone connectivity.

Equus comes with a power-operated sunroof and a lane keeping system that uses sensors and forward facing video analysis. Wander from your lane and your warning is a little tug on your seatbelt. That got my attention. The same data is used to run the smart cruise control that lets you set a speed and the car automatically brakes for slower traffic ahead. The car maintains a gap you set. Pull into an open lane and it accelerates to your previous speed. There is no blind spot warning system, but there is a backup camera and forward turning view cameras to help park the almost 17-foot-long vehicle.

Boss in the back

The top-of-the-line Equus Ultimate package is an extra $7,000 and was designed entirely around the right rear passenger seat. That's where the boss rides in this car.

Hyundai has been selling this version of Equus since 2009 in China, where government officials have a taste for chauffer-driven comfort. China's luxury market is big, and just like in the U.S., it's dominated by the German brands.

All of the Ultimate's climate and entertainment options can be controlled from its heated and cooled back seats. The car's center console extends rearward to separate the back seats, making the Ultimate a very large four passenger sedan.

There are plenty of amenities. The rear console is a refrigerator. A button on the console electronically collapses the front passenger seat against the dash, making room to recline and open the right rear seat's leg support like a La-Z-Boy chair. A hand-held remote control operates the rear seat chair massagers.

An 8-inch television monitor with a DVD mounted on the console sits between the front seatbacks. It's nice and low so people outside won't see what you're watching. Electric motors raise and lower the back side and rear windows sun-blocking screens.

Hyundai isn't marketing Equus under a separate luxury brand because its opulent features and classic looks are supposed to create a luxury halo to lift the entire Hyundai reputation. It's interesting that Equus has the likeness of a bird's wings on its grille and key fobs instead of a horse as suggested by its Latin name — and more importantly, instead of a Hyundai badge. But people will talk as you drive away and see the Hyundai insignia on the trunk.

Another shot at GM as Hyundai re-ups for Super Bowl

As soon as General Motors said this week that it would quit paid ads on Facebook, Ford was on Twitter saying it has doubled-down on social and digital media -- and hinted in a tweet that GM just didn't know how to use new social media.

Hyundai

Then, no sooner had GM said yesterday it would not buy ads in the next Super Bowl, Super Bowl regular Hyundai quickly let us know it won't pass on the biggest annual ad event in TV -- and by the way, (are your ears burning GM?), did know that the game is a huge social media event, too?

In an e-mail, Steve Shannon, Hyundai's marketing vice president, said: "The Super Bowl is a perfect venue for a brand like Hyundai. We are extremely pleased to be an advertiser on the 2013 Super Bowl.

"In addition to the fact that this is far and away the best-watched television program in the U.S., the social media opportunities continue to grow every year and we expect even more impact from this aspect of our advertising on the Super Bowl next year."

The irony is not lost on us that GM global ad chief Joel Ewanick, when he was Hyundai's ad guru, got the company into the Super Bowl and famously used it to roll out the job-loss guarantee plan that helped Hyundai grow sales even through the depths of the financial crisis.

Thanks to this wonderful author for writing up a great review!

Hyundai, Chevrolet, Prius models rate Top Safety Picks

Hyundai_sedan-6376
New 2013 models from Hyundai, Chevrolet and Prius have earned Top Safety Pick status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

By IIHS

Winning that status has become almost the price of entry, particularly for family cars these days. To get it, the vehicle must get the top score of good in the IIHS crash tests which are tougher than the federal tests and include front, side, rear and rollover crash tests, including a roof-strength test in the rollover in which the roof must be able to withstand four times the vehicle's weight.

Top Safety pick winners announced today are:

  • 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco mild-hybrid sedan, a redesign of Chevy's mainstream, midsize family car. The previous Malibu, still on sale as a 2012, also was a top pick.
  • 2012 Hyundai Azera, a redesign of the premium sedan. The previous model, which dated to 2006, did not get the current battery of testing.
  • 2012 Toyota Prius c, the all-new smaller Prius hybrid hatchback. The standard Prius and new, larger Prius V already have earned Top Pick status.

Hyundai kills stick-shift version of Sonata sedan

Sonatax-wide-community
For 2013, Hyundai is pretty much playing the same tune when it comes to its flagship Sonata sedan.

Prices go up a bit and the manual transmission version, the cheapest of all Sonatas, is being cut from the lineup because so few buyers wanted it.

Most prices increase by $100 to $150 or more per trim for 2013.

All 2013 Sonatas now come standard with a six-speed automatic transmission. Without the manual transmission, all Sonatas now get 24 miles per gallon in city driving, 35 mpg on the highway.

The "popular equipment package" on the GLS version costs $825 and includes features like fog lights and heated seats, for a total cost of $21,720.

The SE trim now comes standard with heated front seats, and the Limited version trim no longer comes with a panoramic sunroof. Instead, it gets a regular-size sunroof. The Limited trim is $600 less expensive this year because of the change. If you still want a panoramic sunroof, it's been added to a $2,900 Limited Premium Package. Ultimately, a 2013 Hyundai Sonata tops out at $31,270, which is just $100 more than last year's model.

The 2013 Hyundai Sonata is already on sale.

2013 Hyundai Sonata Receives More Equipment, Loses Manual Transmission

2013-hyundai-sonata-front-three-quarter-623x389
The Hyundai Sonata is up against an almost-all-new segment in 2013, and the automaker won’t have an all-new version ready until 2014. So, to tide buyers over in the meantime, Hyundai has added even more content to an already content-rich ride for the 2013 model year.

Buyers of higher 2013 Sonata trim levels are in luck: both the SE and Limited trims gain added standard equipment that had previously not been offered. Sonata SE models gain heated seats for the first time, and as standard equipment, to boot. The 2013 Hyundai Sonata SE now starts at $24,120, an increase of $150. The Sonata Limited now comes standard with a traditional sunroof, in place of the previously standard panoramic sunroof; the panoramic sunroof is available as part of the $2900 Premium Package for 2013, which also includes a touch-screen navigation system, backup camera, and Infinity sound system. Compared to 2012, the upgraded model sees its price rise by $600 to $26,620 for a Sonata Limited without the Premium Package.

Just because the higher-trim models see some revision doesn’t mean the entry-level 2013 Sonata GLS isn’t tweaked as well. The Popular Equipment Package now includes fog lamps and heated seats, along with the 16-inch alloy wheels, power driver seat, chrome interior door handles, leatherette door inserts, and automatic headlights that were offered last year. Pricing for the package is bumped $75 from $750 to $825. The 2013 Hyundai Sonata GLS starts at $21,670 and is now standard with the six-speed automatic transmission, a $100 increase over the auto-equipped Sonata GLS from 2012. The base 2012 Sonata GLS with six-speed manual has been discontinued for the 2013 model year.

The 2013 Hyundai Sonata is powered by either a 2.4-liter direct-injected inline four-cylinder engine that is rated at 198 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque in GLS and Limited trims, and 200 hp and 186 lb-ft in SE trim. Available on the SE and Limited trim levels is a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 that produces 274 hp and 269 lb-ft. All Sonatas are front-wheel drive and use a six-speed automatic transmission. 2013 Sonatas are available now on dealership lots across the country.

Hyundai to Equip Its Cars With Throttle-Override System

Ob-su756_pedal_e_20120502133558
Hyundai Motor Co. said it will equip all of its new vehicles with electronic throttle-override technology beginning this month’s production run. The feature, the car maker said, will allow drivers to control a vehicle’s speed and bring it to a stop even in so-called runaway throttle situations.

Because electronic throttle links have replaced the cable or pushrod linkages that used to control engine speed, there is a possibility that electronic malfunctions can cause the driver to lose control of the engine’s speed.

Numerous cases of alleged unintended acceleration have made consumers especially wary of the potential hazards of the electronic or “drive by wire” systems that increasingly control our vehicles.

Hyundai said the likelihood of problems with these systems is extremely low, but it is seeking to reassure drivers that they will be able to keep their cars from getting away from them if something goes wrong with the throttle.

“With Hyundai’s brake pedal throttle override capability, any brake pedal input by the driver, even with a runaway throttle condition, completely overrides any throttle malfunction,” said Robert Babcock, director of certification and compliance affairs for Hyundai’s technical center. “It is no longer possible to have increasing engine power once the brake pedal is depressed by the driver,” he said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is considering including a brake pedal throttle override requirement in its motor vehicle regulations but has not yet approved a rule.

Hyundai adding third shift, 877 jobs at Alabama plant

Elantrax-wide-community
Automakers continue to create more jobs in the U.S., and the latest is Hyundai.

By MONTGOMERY ADVERTISER, AP

The South Korean automaker will add a third shift of production at its Montgomery, Ala., facility. That will create 877 positions and push total employment at the plant past 3,000. The plant will be able to turn out about 245,000 vehicles a year, up about 20,000 due to the extra shift.

This year's booming auto demand, especially for hot models such as the Hyundai Sonata midsize sedan and Elantra compact, are making the extra work possible:

Sonata production began two years ago and now represents a third of Hyundai's U.S. sales. Elantra output started last year.

"The continued success of Hyundai's Sonata and Elantra in North America is a direct reflection of the dedication to quality and craftsmanship" at the plants, said Young Deuk Lim, Hyundia's chief executive officer at its Alabama plant. "This commitment is the key reason Hyundai Motor Co. chose to continue to invest in the people of Alabama and increase vehicle production in Montgomery."

Hyundai says the transition to three shifts will begin in September. Job applications and pre-employment training will begin this summer.
