Hyundai wins three AutoPacfic's Vehicle Satisfaction Awards!

Carmakers are constantly improving their products and relationships with their customers. They communicate their success by citing the satisfaction of their owners. “Proof of satisfied customers is as good as gold,” says George Peterson, president of AutoPacific. “We’ve found that more than one-third of new car buyers are positively influenced by objective awards based on owner ratings when deciding on a new car or truck.

AutoPacific's Vehicle Satisfaction Award is an industry benchmark for measuring how satisfied an owner is with his/her new vehicle.  This study by the Southern California-based automotive research firm summarizes the results of over 68,000 new vehicle owners.

“Vehicles that score highest in the Vehicle Satisfaction Awards are delivering value and satisfaction across a wide range of attributes,” says Peterson. “The winners perform well in 48 separate categories that objectively measure the ownership experience.”

Automotive research and consulting firm AutoPacific awarded the Hyundai Genesis, Hyundai Sonata and Hyundai Elantra with the 2011 Vehicle Satisfaction Award in their respective categories, making Hyundai one of the top-ranked award winners at the manufacturer level.

Every so often a car comes along that has people scrambling for their cameras...

Every so often a car comes along that has people scrambling for their cameras to snag a shot of it; drivers slowing down to steal a longer look; and kids rushing up to it in parking lots, peppering the driver with questions. The all-new 2012 Hyundai Veloster is one of those cars. It's got that reverse halo effect going on.  And from what we've witnessed so far, ordinary folks young and old are digging it.

Not surprisingly, the Veloster is first and foremost about its form.  There are several flashy details: the three-door setup; the motorcycle-inspired interior cues; the trick, trapezoidal exhaust tips center-mounted in a big black rear fascia piece; muscular fenders framing the optional, 18-inch rim/tire package with painted inserts; blacked-out A-pillar; bold, buck-toothed front fascia; and its scalloped, glass-heavy, baby-got-back behind.

Like several other cars in Hyundai's lineup, the Veloster deploys a version of the automaker's direct-injected 1.6-liter four-cylinder rated at 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque (the same numbers as the Accent), mated to either a six-speed manual or Hyundai's new dual-clutch transmission (DCT) with paddle shifters.

We sampled both gearboxes and came away relatively impressed. The six-speed manual's clutch engagement was easy to get used to and was neither too light nor heavy. The throws were on the shortish side and overall feel was solid for a car  in this segment. Hyundai is estimating some 30 percent of buyers will go manual, and with EPA numbers rated at 28 mpg city and the magical 40 mpg highway, we suspect they're on target.

Inside, the Veloster is as expressive as the exterior, with instrument binnacles, the stop-start button, and other touches drawing cues from sport bikes. The front doors feature large handles an engineer told us did nothing but look cool. Seats are nicely bolstered for when the going gets curvy. The optional moon roof brightens up the cabin, and six airbags are set to deploy in emergency situations. Look out the rear view, and you’ll actually be able to see, with the lower window and right-sized rear view mirrors providing acceptable sight lines. The window even has a darling little window wiper. Grab the hidden handle to open up the rear third door, and you'll find two seats with a cupholder setup in the middle. Also, as has become the norm with Hyundai, there are multiple power outlets (including a 115-volt outlet) and ports to connect and charge all your devices.

At the center of it all is a standard, LG-sourced 7-inch touchscreen with some of the best graphic design elements we’ve laid our eyes on recently. The system is customizable and comes with Hyundai's Blue Link telematics system on board, with its impressive suite of emergency, guidance, and diagnostic features. Pandora integration, Gracenote voice recognition, and Bluetooth also come standard. The available tech package features a 450-watt, 8-speaker stereo system with XM Radio, a backup camera, and navigation.

Add it all up and from where we're sitting, the Veloster lends Hyundai the sort of reverse halo effect the automaker was seeking, at a relatively affordable price. Now get that turbo model here and that halo may really shine.

Hyundai's Drive for Hope

To show the environmental advantages and performance of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) while benefitting kids with cancer, Hyundai Motor America launched the Hyundai Drive 4 Hope.  As the official car of Hope on Wheels, Hyundai’s major pediatric cancer program, a Hyundai FCEV Tucson will travel more than 4,500 miles coast to coast for kids with cancer.  During September National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Hyundai Hope on Wheels will award a total of $7.1 million to children’s hospitals nationwide. During its national tour, the Hyundai Tucson FCEV team, Zafar Brooks and Joe Foster will stop at hospitals across the country, collecting colorful handprints from childhood cancer patients and survivors along the way. By the end of September, the vehicle will have collected hundreds of handprints from children around the country, each representing a personal story about a child’s battle with this deadly disease.

The kickoff happened with a handprint ceremony at UCSF Pediatric Hematology/Oncology in San Francisco on September 1st. Through the month of September the Hyundai Tucson FCEV will travel over 4,500 miles through 15 states.

When Every Drop Counts, There is No Doubt That the 2011 Hyundai Sonata is a Hugely Important Vehicle.

Hyundai has actually made quite a few visual changes to the Sonata Hybrid's exterior making the Sonata Hybrid more aerodynamic and lowering its drag coefficient to a slippery 0.25

The 2011 Sonata Hybrid marks the first production use of Hyundai's Hybrid Blue Drive technology. As a full parallel hybrid drivetrain, Blue Drive can operate independently on either its 169-horsepower 2.4-liter gasoline engine or its 40-horsepower electric motor. Another key feature the Blue Drive system is its battery technology. Hyundai claims to be the only automaker utilizing lithium-polymer batteries in a production vehicle, the advantages of which are many.  Lithium-polymer batteries offer the same benefits of lithium-ion batteries, but are more robust, lighter, easier to cool, and more easily packaged due to a significantly thinner profile. Also, compared to nickel-metal hydride batteries, lithium-polymer batteries are more resistant to changes in temperature, have a slower self-discharge rate, and offer 10 percent greater efficiency with a 40 percent reduction in volume.

Hyundai's Hybrid Power Control management software also features a start/stop system that shuts down the gasoline engine when the vehicle is stationary, automatically restarting it when pressure is reapplied to the throttle.

To help ensure that the Sonata Hybrid is being driven as efficiently as possible, a Hybrid Technology Display is located inside, monitoring which mode the vehicle is being driven in, energy flow inside the vehicle, engine and motor movement, fuel level, battery power level and charge status, and both average and instant mpg.

Hyundai claims its Sonata Hybrid is a segment leader in many regards, with the lowest curb weight, most horsepower, and greatest passenger volume of any of its competition from Ford, Nissan, Toyota and Honda.

Hey Fans, Hyundai vehicles are getting a fresh look! Check this out for a sneak peak on their transformations.

Hyundai will continue to enter new product segments, including upscale niches, while keeping lower-priced models fresh over the next three years.

The Hyundai vehicles you're going to see revamped are the following: Azera, Elantra, Santa Fe, Accent, Genesis, Veloster, Genesis Coupe, Elantra Touring, and the Veracruz.
Hyundai_veloster

Further down the road, Hyundai will launch a more luxurious SUV, a dedicated plug-in hybrid sedan and a sport sedan to compete with the BMW 3-series.

Work is under way on Hyundai's oft-rumored sports sedan; an answer to the BMW 3-series. However, it is unlikely to appear before 2013. The sporty sedan will be derived from the rear-wheel-drive platform used for the Genesis. Styling is expected be marked by aggressive lines more akin to the Genesis Coupe than the Genesis sedan or Equus.

Hyundai is also developing a plug-in hybrid sedan that will arrive in the United States in either the 2013 or 2014 model year. Details are vague, but the car will be a dedicated plug-in hybrid, not a variant of an existing model.
