Hyundai Veloster Wins 2011 GOOD DESIGN Awards’ Transportation Category
South Korean automakers have been on a roll for the past two years and there are no signs of letting off. A radical departure from Hyundais of the past, the new Hyundai Veloster earned GOOD DESIGN award in the transportation category. Held at the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, GOOD DESIGN awards are handed annually to the most innovative designers in a broad array of industries– not just automotive.
According to Hyundai Motor America director of Product Planning, Scott Margason, “With Veloster, we want to show consumers that high style, fuel efficiency and affordable pricing can all be found in one vehicle. Veloster stands out from the crowd with a stylish yet functional design. We’re honored that GOOD DESIGN is recognizing the beautiful design and unique personality of the car.”
Highlights of the Veloster’s design are its three-door layout. While this design has been adopted by the and Saturn SC-2 3-door coupe in the past, the third door is opened conventionally rather than suicide, retains a B-pillar for structural rigidity, and has its own exterior door handle rather than needing to rely on the front door to open first. What’s more, designers compliment the Hyundai for its bold design statement and its distinctive forms including black A-pillars to give the sports coupe an aggressive motorcycle helmet visor appearance. A distinctive glass hatch in the rear and dual centered chrome exhaust tips carry the edgy design to the rear. Inside, the center console is designed to resemble a sport bike fuel tank while HVAC air vents are heavily influenced by motorcycle tailpipes.

Hyundai America Nabs BMW Designer Christopher Chapman
If there's one thing that Hyundai and Kia can lay claim to, is that both companies eventually understood the importance of design and made significant efforts to improve the styling of their vehicles in the past few years.
To achieve their goal, the Koreans didn't hesitate to bring in experienced designers from other brands, with the most notable transfer being that of Peter Schreyer from Audi who took over and revolutionized Kia's design language.
The South Korean group continues to inject its brands with foreign designers, with its latest hire being Christopher Chapman of former BMW fame. Chapman was named chief designer of the Hyundai Design Center in Irvine, California, and will be responsible for new vehicle and concept design for Hyundai.
“With over 22 years of experience in the industry working on esteemed automotive brands, Chris provides a level of talent that will help further our design portfolio,” said SukGeun Oh, Head of Design, Senior Executive Vice President Hyundai Design Center. “We are thrilled to have Christopher Chapman as chief designer for Hyundai and look forward to continuing the strong momentum of our vehicle designs.”
Chapman started his career at the Isuzu Technical Center of America in Cerritos, California, in 1989 and was the designer chosen for the exterior of the XU-1 show car, which won Best Concept at the 1993 Tokyo Motor Show.
In 1994, he joined the BMW Group at DesignworksUSA in California, where he designed the exteriors of the X5 Sport Activity Vehicle and X Coupe concept car before he moved to Germany to design the CS1 concept shown at the Geneva Auto Salon in 2002, followed by the first generation 1 Series production Coupe and its derivatives.
In 2002, Chapman was appointed Director of Automotive Design and has been responsible for leading several conceptual and production vehicles including the new X5, X3, Z4 and the first BMW 1-series E87.
“Christopher Chapman is an outstanding addition to the design team at HATCI,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. “We are proud to add such a talented individual to lead the team of dedicated designers at HATCI that will continue to develop innovative vehicles for both the United States and global auto markets.”

Six Hyundai Models Earn 2012 IIHS Top Safety Pick Honors
Hyundai Elantra, Sonata, Genesis, Equus, Tucson and Santa Fe Achieve Highest Safety Ratings
COSTA MESA, Calif., Dec. 15, 2011– Six Hyundai models, the all-new Hyundai Elantra, Sonata, Genesis, Equus, Tucson and Santa Fe, achieved the 2012 Top Safety Pick honor from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Top Safety Pick recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover, and rear crashes based on “good” ratings in Institute tests. Winners must also have available Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a crash avoidance feature that significantly reduces crash risk.
“Safety has always been a top priority at Hyundai, so we are thrilled to see six of our models on this important and prestigious list,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, Product and Corporate Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Having led the industry in standardizing Electronic Stability Control for the midsize sedan segment back in 2005, Hyundai is committed to developing and providing the best in both passive and active safety technologies.”
The IIHS Top Safety Pick ratings help consumers pick vehicles that offer a higher level of protection than federal safety standards require. In 2010, the Institute toughened the criteria for Top Safety Pick by adding a requirement that all qualifiers must earn a “good” rating for performance in a roof strength test to assess protection in a rollover crash.
“For the second year running a record number of models qualify,” says Institute president Adrian Lund. “It’s tough to win, and we commend auto manufacturers for making safety a top priority.”

Hyundai Sonata Leads the Competition With Best Fuel Economy in the EPA Large Car Segment
Hyundai Sonata, the popular sedan offering class-above interior volume compared with its key competitors, also provides the best fuel economy in the EPA Large Car segment with an exceptional 28 mpg combined fuel economy rating.
Sonata interior volume is a generous 120.2 cubic feet, placing it in the EPA Large Car segment, where most of its competitors offer significantly lower combined fuel economy ratings.
Even among traditionally recognized mid-sized segment competitors, Sonata offers unsurpassed fuel economy.
"In developing the made-in-USA Sonata for mid-size sedan consumers, Hyundai engineers continually sought to exceed their expectations," said Mike O'Brien, Hyundai's vice president of corporate and strategic planning. "This meant overcoming the traditional compromises that face product development engineers, such as providing comfortable interior roominess coupled with powerful engines and exceptional fuel economy."
Sonata's large-car level of interior roominess, combined with fuel economy leadership, proves that manufacturers must continually challenge conventional thinking to delight their customers in new ways. This year, it's clear that consumers have responded to Hyundai's development team efforts with Sonata selling more than 200,000 Sonatas for the first time ever. REAL-WORLD FUEL ECONOMY SATISFACTION
Not only does Sonata excel in government tests with exceptional combined fuel economy ratings, it also proves its efficiency in the day-to-day driving of its owners. In the 2011 J.D. Power APEAL satisfaction study, Sonata had the highest owner-reported satisfaction levels of its mid-size and large sedan competitors, with 30 percent of its owners rating its fuel economy the top rank of "truly exceptional."

2012 Hyundai Veloster offers unique styling, fun ride, tremendous value
Davide can understand parts of the Korean language which correspond to his belt levels very well thanks to his instructors at Grasshoppers and the studying he does at home.
Often times, when my wife and I test him, we'll slip in some higher-belt phrases to try and throw him off, like recently when we said: 'Dwiah Yeup Chagi, Mom Dollryuh Yeup Chagi.'
“That's a jumping sidekick, 180 side kick,” he said proudly, and then went on to perform the Black-belt manoeuvre in our kitchen, which ended with a chair slammed to the floor, a sore foot, and one old Black Lab running for cover.
Out of our kitchen and into the world of automobile design language, Hyundai unleashed a wicked 180 Twist Kick (Mom Dollryuh Beeteuluh Chagi) on the 'common-car' world this year with its award-winning 2012 Veloster.
One could also say Hyundai executed a squat-rear-end, reverse-wedge-roofline, wide-stance design move that was dissimilar to anything previously brought forth from the South Korean auto maker.
And I'd bet it was high marks in styling and appearance that played a big part in Veloster's 'Best New Sports Performance Car (under $50,000)' category win at AJAC's recent 2012 Canadian Car of the Year TestFest where it beat out some heavy competition from Volkswagen's Jetta GLI and the Kia Optima SX which finished second and third in voting respectively.
Veloster's dual centred chrome exhaust tips, tall rear apron, distinctive rear glass hatch, nasty hood-scoop detailing, and our tester's sweet set of 18-inch, five-spoke alloys with custom-look painted inserts may have also notched it a few more high styling scores.
Perhaps the most talked-about feature on the new Veloster was its unique third door. It wasn't one of those rear-hinged half-doors, but a smaller-than-usual, front-hinged rear door on the passenger side that could be opened independently of the front passenger door.
I liked that they put that third door on the right side as it made it safer to unload the kids to the curb as opposed to the road. It's location, and mere existence, also permitted Hyundai to make the driver's door a bit longer, which I thought made for better visibility around the B-pillar out my left side.
That longer driver door also aided in the exit/entry process, while entry to the rear from the left side wasn't all that bad either with a driver seat that easily slid far forward and made for a non-muscle-pull entry for an adult.
Entry to the rear courtesy that unique third door started with the light pull of a slick handle that was positioned high and blended in well at the top left corner of the door next to the black window surround.
The third door provided easy entry for my kids. Olivia could scoot across the rear to her booster on the left side. But only two of my three kids could fit there though as the centre portion was made up, not of a 'fake' third seat hump, but a more practical open storage tray with two cup holders.
Those rear seats were comfortable and there was surprising legroom, but headroom was limited and tall adults might want to be mindful seated back there when the rear hatch is being closed as its upper glass panel might say hello to their noggins.
The Veloster's deep cargo hold swallowed up a weekend's worth of our stuff for a Thanksgiving long-weekend trip home to Cape Breton. It measured 30 inches long behind the rear seats and about 43 inches wide.
With the 60/40 rear seatbacks folded (no need to remove or adjust headrests) cargo space expanded to about 57 inches long up to the front seatbacks.
Both front and rear passengers experienced an airy, open feel in the cabin thanks to the optional panoramic sunroof which pretty much extended from the base of the windshield, across the top of the roof, and on down to the middle of the rear.
Comfort and great drive position was not hard to find up front while all controls and dials were easy to work both from the stack and steering-wheel.
There was an abundance of family-friendly features in our tester, which included: Aux., iPod and USB ports; Bluetooth, two 12-volt power sources and an optional AC 115V/150W household-style plug (nice!); two cup holders; dual-opening armrest bin; large bottle holders on the doors; a netted pouch on passenger seatback; and the LATCH system for child safety seats.
More standard features on our tester included: six airbags, fog lamps, a seven-inch LCD multimedia system with backup camera, air conditioning, proximity keyless entry with push-button start, heated front seats, tilt/telescoping steering column, cruise control, steering-wheel audio controls, ABS, ESC, traction control, four-wheel disc brakes, and power-heated side-view mirrors.
Optional equipment (Tech Package w/ six-speed with EcoShift dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters) on our tester brought the price up from an MSRP of $18,999 to an as-tested $23,899; that package included: the 18-inch alloys with painted inserts, Hill Start Assist, the panoramic sunroof, navigation system, 450-watt eight-speaker Dimension premium audio system, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, premium cloth seating with simulated leather bolsters, aluminum alloy sport pedals, automatic headlamps, and the AC 115V/150W power outlet.
On the road, the Veloster was powered by a fuel-efficient 1.6L I4 with gasoline direct injection paired with an optional six-speed Eco-shift dual-clutch transmission (six-speed manual was standard). And while power and torque weren't its strong points (138 hp and 123 ft-lbs), we didn't find ourselves wanting more oomph on our loaded-down C.B. trip both on the highway ride and on a few twisty, hilly Island jaunts. It was on those 'jaunts' where we experienced the Veloster's excellent handling and responsive steering.
On the whole, the Veloster was fun to drive and very well equipped for its price range while it offered a unique-looking, sporty exterior and interior that should appeal to younger buyers or to parents looking for an affordable, safe ride for that newly-licensed teenager.

The Hyundai Veloster Wins A 12th Annual Auto Style Awards
Following the 2011 Equus’ style award win last year, Hyundai is grabbing consumer attention and media headlines again with the Veloster. The Veloster and the other winners were selected by fashion editors, stylists, fashion photographers and designers; all experts that live outside of the automotive world.
“With Veloster, we want to show consumers that high style and reasonable pricing can go hand in hand,” said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Veloster stands out from the crowd with a stylish yet functional design. We’re honored that eCityofStyle is recognizing the beautiful design and unique personality of the car.” According to Hyundai, Veloster’s cutting edge integration of the third-door combined with a breakthrough design inspired by a high-performance sport bike allows Veloster to stand-out from its competition and makes a bold statement about Hyundai’s commitment to innovative design. Distinctive black A-pillars give the glass a motorcycle helmet visor appearance and in the front is an aggressive form of Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front grille and unique Hyundai-signature LED position lights. Veloster’s dynamic rear design has a distinctive glass hatch, dual centered chrome exhaust tips and black lower fascia that complement the assertive front fascia. Inside, the center stack and controls resemble a sport bike fuel tank and the air vents are inspired by motorcycle tailpipes, while the floor console mirrors the seat of a bike.
Beyond design, the Veloster’s fuel-sipping feature of 40 MPG highway adds to its appeal in LA where fuel prices are well above the national average. Joining the Veloster as Auto Style Award winners are the BMW 6 Series, Fiat 500, Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG, and Range Rover Evoque.

Hyundai’s Reputation is on the Rise
“Hyundai has made impressive efforts to improve brand perception and we can see that it has truly paid off in the mainstream rankings,” said Eric Lyman, vice president, Residual Value Solutions, ALG.
According to Hyundai, much of this recent success can be attributed to a trio of high-quality, high-efficiency cars that have launched in the past year, including:
- Hyundai Elantra—Which will soon add a coupe body style to its popular sedan and five-door hatchback configurations.
- Hyundai Accent—With best-in-class fuel economy (30 mpg city/40 mpg highway/34 mpg combined) and horsepower (138 hp).
- Hyundai Veloster—Showcasing a particularly dynamic design as the industry’s only three-door coupe.
Plus, because the Elantra and Veloster are capable of 40 mpg as well, as is the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Hyundai now offers four different vehicles capable of reaching that impressive mark. As a result, not only did that frugal foursome account for nearly 20,000 sales in October alone, but they also helped Hyundai achieve an overall fleet fuel-efficiency rating of 37 mpg (using the current CAFE calculations).
“Hyundai continues to impress car shoppers with the level of quality throughout the lineup from the entry level Accent all the way to our flagship Equus sedan,” said Frank Ferrara, executive vice president, Customer Satisfaction, Hyundai Motor America. “And, with a slew of recently launched and redesigned models, Hyundai quality and brand perception will continue to grow.”

2012 Hyundai Azera: The sincerest form of flattery
If you've ever criticized Hyundai for derivative design, you'll want to have your torches and pitchforks at the ready for this one.
The first thing I thought when Hyundai pulled the wraps off of its new 2012 Azera here at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show was that it looked just like a Toyota Camry. Perhaps that's not totally fair, because as the large sedan spun slowly on its turntable, I also saw hints of Mazda6, Nissan Altima, and BMW 6-Series. For a brand like Hyundai that's been building a ton of steam over the last few years with its distinctive Sonata, Elantra, and Accent models, looking just like the competition is not a good thing.
Interestingly, the Azera was referred to as "the most dramatic example of the Fluidic Sculpture design language" during its unveiling. Whoever wrote that line on the prompter clearly hasn't seen the Veloster or the newly unveiled Genesis Coupe.
Quibbles about design aside, the Azera does check many of the right boxes where specs and tech are concerned. Under its hood spins a 3.3-liter V-6 engine that uses gasoline direct-injection technology to send 293 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission (yes, there is a manual shift mode) and out through the front 18- or 19-inch wheels. Fuel economy is estimated at 20 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. Looking at the numbers, the Azera seems to be able to go blow for blow with the Toyota Avalon, Nissan Maxima, and non-SHO Ford Taurus with which it competes. The Azera is nicely equipped where cabin comfort is concerned. Leather heated seats are standard for the front and rear rows. If the Sonata and Genesis sedans that sandwich the new sedan in Hyundai's lineup are any indicator, fit and finish should be good.
One area where Hyundai has been consistently winning our favor has been cabin tech, and the Azera looks to be no exception. Hyundai's new Blue Link telematics system that debuted on the Veloster will be standard on the Azera with a similar tiered system (Assurance, Essentials, and Guidance) of available functionality. Navigation is also standard, as are satellite radio, traffic, weather, and stock data from XM Satellite Radio. Owners are also given a choice between a seven-speaker Dimension audio system or a 550-watt, 12-speaker Infinity premium audio rig. Regardless of which you chose, Bluetooth calling and audio streaming and USB/iPod connectivity are standard.

Hyundai aims to raise brand awareness with 5 TV spots before and during Super Bowl
Hyundai Motor Co. is hoping that five television spots before and during the Feb. 5 Super Bowl game will help to bolster its rising brand recognition and continue big sales gains from the past few years.
North American CEO John Krafcik says the fast-growing brand is working on a 60-second spot that will run right before kickoff, plus two ads on the pregame show and two during the first and third quarters of the game.
He wouldn’t say how much the Korean automaker is spending on the ads, which will compete with most creative spots American companies have to offer during one of television’s highest-rated and most expensive sporting events. Last year Super Bowl ads cost companies about $3 million for 30 seconds.
Krafcik said Hyundai hopes to have standout spots as well, but it will focus more on a brand message rather than going for entertainment value.
“We’re competing with Doritos and Pepsi and Anheuser-Busch,” he said Friday at an auto show briefing for reporters at a technical center near Ann Arbor, Mich. “Those are tough competitors from an entertainment point of view.”
Hyundai, he said, might have a little more fun with its ads this year and try to make them more memorable than in the past. But it’s also trying to sway about a third of the auto market that has a neutral view of the brand, which sells the Elantra compact, Sonata midsize car and Tucson crossover SUV, among other models.
Hyundai has had huge sales growth in a lackluster U.S. auto market. Through October, the company has sold more than 545,000 vehicles, already passing last year’s record sales of 538,000, according to Autodata Corp. Hyundai’s U.S. market share has risen from 4.2 percent in 2009 to 5.2 percent so far this year, and analysts believe the company has taken sales mainly from Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp., both of which have experienced declines.
Hyundai’s sales are so strong that it’s having trouble supplying cars and crossovers to its dealers, Krafcik said. It has raised the annual output at its Montgomery, Ala., factory to around 330,000 this year, and will produce more cars in North America in 2012, he said. But he wouldn’t comment when asked if the company plans to build a new factory in the U.S.

Hyundai SEMA Booth Features Five Custom Cars For Performance Hungry Tuners
Hyundai will showcase the innovative Veloster and the performance-oriented Genesis Coupe at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show Nov. 1-4, 2011. Hyundai has again united with some of the biggest names in the aftermarket industry to build five one-of-a-kind models for the Hyundai display at SEMA (booth #24387) at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
The lineup of Hyundai vehicles includes:
- ARK Performance Veloster
- PM Lifestyle Veloster
- Genesis Hurricane SC
- Rhys Millen Racing RM500 Genesis Coupe
- Rhys Millen Racing 2WD Global Rally Cross Veloster
“Each year we bring our newest, most exciting cars to SEMA through a partnership with aftermarket specialists to create even more powerful options for Hyundai owners,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, Product and Corporate Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “This year, we chose to bring back the tuner-friendly Genesis Coupe as well as debut modifications to our new and innovative three-door coupe, the 2012 Veloster.”
Adding even more Velosters to Hyundai’s modified pack, RIDES magazine, in association with Lux Motorwerks, also built three custom Velosters centered around the passion points of music, technology and gaming. Each of the three Velosters boasts its own style, top-of-the-line modifications and the most current gear available.
ARK Performance Veloster
To showcase the performance capabilities and aftermarket potential of its three-door coupe, Hyundai teamed up with ARK Performance to transform Veloster into a sleek rally car. The ARK Performance Veloster will be unveiled with a custom twin-scroll turbocharger increasing its horsepower to 210-horsepower and a bright green and flat gray paint scheme to give enthusiasts a glimpse at Veloster’s potential. The Veloster will showcase mechanical, interior and exterior modifications including an open wheel concept with aggressive fenders and Nitto tires. ARK will also develop Veloster specific parts to showcase the tunability of the engine and vehicle exterior.
PM Lifestyle Veloster
Hyundai partnered with PM Lifestyle, a leader in creative innovation and digital media distribution in the automotive industry, and the Universal Technical Institute (UTI) to develop a powerful and interactive custom Veloster for this year’s SEMA Show. The bold, blue Veloster with a carbon-fiber hood, Konig Deception wheels and custom leather interior will make its debut on the SEMA Show floor and then take off on a three-year show tour with UTI, making appearances at over 120 autocross, supercross and school demonstration events. With an anticipated performance of 163-horsepower, PM Lifestyle’s custom Veloster will showcase many special modifications, making it a guaranteed highlight at this year’s SEMA Show.
Genesis Hurricane SC
Showcasing the extreme power of Hyundai’s most popular performance car, Hyundai America Technical Center Inc. (HATCI) teamed up with Magnuson Products, Rhys Millen Racing, Harman International and Torvec Inc. to develop and build a special edition prototype Genesis Coupe, the Genesis Hurricane SC. The Genesis Hurricane SC represents a two year development effort by HATCI, Hyundai’s design, technology and engineering branch, as its engineers worked to enhance all aspects of the vehicle including power, traction, braking, exterior and interior design and audio system. Highlighting the performance modifications, HATCI teamed up with Magnuson Products to supercharge Genesis Coupe’s 3.8L V-6 engine with a liquid to air intercooler, producing more than 450-horsepower.
In addition to the supercharged V-6, the Hurricane features an IsoTorque differential from Torvec Inc., exterior enhancements from Rhys Millen Racing and a Harman International high level Lexicon audio system.
Rhys Millen Racing RM500 Genesis Coupe
Rhys Millen Racing 2WD Global Rally Cross Veloster

Hyundai Plans to Make a Turbo Version of the Veloster!
Hyundai is going to fire up the power on its hot little sports mobile, giving turbo power to its new, little Veloster three-door.
The hottest version of the car will come with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik told reporters gathered last night in Las Vegas on the eve of the SEMA aftermarket parts show. Interesting timing: The Veloster -- one of the most novel new cars to hit the market -- has barely landed in showrooms, and already Hyundai is talking about a hotter version.
Krafcik also revealed that some tweaks are on the way for Veloster's pricier corporate sibling, the Genesis coupe. Hyundai appears to be saving that announcement for the auto shows in the next three months.
