Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Supplants Ford Fusion As Government’s Green Car Of Choice
President Barack Obama pledged to modernize the government fleet, and
he has done just that…though many of these new, fuel-efficient cars
aren’t American. In fact, 54% of the Obama Administration’s fleet of
alternatively fueled vehicles come from Asian brands.
The Asian brands that make up a bulk of U.S. government fleets are Hyundai Motor Co, Honda Motor Co, Toyota Motor Corporation, and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation.
The Obama administration set a goal of purchasing only alternatively fueled vehicles for its fleet by 2015. They have been purchasing alternatively fueled vehicles since 2009 by the thousands. However, their purchases of these vehicles has been decreasing for years. Sales of these vehicles was 8139 in 2009, and dropped to 6,467 in 2010, it then dropped to 2,645 in fiscal 2011. In 2012, the government purchased just 1,801 hybrid vehicles, making up about 3.6% of the more than 50,000 vehicles purchase by the government last year.
It is certainly true that the U.S government should practice what it encourages, and use alternatively fueled vehicles as well to set an example, however, they don’t favor American cars as much as they used to. The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has replaced the Ford Fusion hybrid as the most popular green car in government fleets.
One of the reasons stated for this is that the Fusion was not available in large quantities at the time as anew Fusion hybrid was coming out. The same was said for the Ford C-Max hybrid, though there is no mention of the Chevy Volt, another popular hybrid vehicle.
It’s worth asking…is the Obama administration backtracking on its hybrid fleet pledge? Is the 2015 goal even possible anymore?

Detroit auto show: How Hyundai plans to take the luxury segment
Hyundai President and CEO John Krafcik said the
company intends to make a greater dent in the luxury segment, as Hyundai
introduced the HCD-14 Genesis concept, a “vision” for its premium
lineup going forward the 2013 North American International Auto Show.
Its
exterior has sleek, low profile that that the company’s design engineer
aims at an “effortless” look. Under the hood, the HCD-14 luxury sedan
has a 5-liter Tau V8 engine. Its eight-speed automatic transmission
includes paddle shifters on the steering wheel.
But
the real innovation comes on the interior, with a proprietary
technology that includes the driver using touch free controls. Imagine,
as was seen in a video, the driver not physically touching any knobs or
controls to adjust the stereo, for example, but rather just gesturing in
thin air.
Here is how Hyundai explains this technology:
"Using state-of-the-art driver eye-tracking and 3-D hand-gesture recognition, HCD-14 Genesis is able to recognize driver commands free from the distractions associated with manual controls. Once a specific feature is selected via eye-tracking, thumb controls or gesture recognition can be used to select navigation, infotainment, audio, HVAC, and even smartphone connectivity functions. This intuitive interface provides the driver with complete control while keeping his eyes safely above the cowl plane, using a windshield heads-up display (HUD) for minimal driving distraction. This proprietary interface represents Hyundai’s vision for future vehicle HMI and sets a new benchmark in active driver safety technology."
After it was shown, Krafcik said perhaps the audience was wondering, “Is this a Bentley disguised Genesis sedan?”
“The
answer again, I’m saying this twice, it’s really not,” he said. “It’s
not the ‘next-gen’ Genesis that we’ll debut next year. It’s really the
guiding light for a whole portfolio of products we’ve got coming.”
It’s part of an effort, in Krafcik’s words, to “translate the brand from a value brand to a valuable brand.”
It
makes sense, considering that Hyundai’s current premium models, the
Genesis and the Equus, set sales records for the company in 2012.
“In fact, every year we’ve had Genesis and Equuus in the lineup, they have broken prior year sales record,” Krafcik said.
Currently,
those two models also have 9 percent share in the premium segment,
whereas the overall brand’s share in the industry is just 5 percent.
The
HCD-14 concept also marks what Hyundai intends to do with its models,
and that is to gradually create more divergence between mass market
products and premium products.
“This
is really an important concept car for us, and that’s why we brought it
to Detroit, and we’d love to hear what you think about it,” Krafcik
said.

Hyundai Pushes Further Upscale with HCD-14 Concept
Hyundai Motor Co. said will debut its HCD-14 concept vehicle at this month’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The low-cut, fastback car — call it an answer to the Audi A7 if you like – is meant as a hint of Hyundai’s plans in the high-end car market. It also shows where the company is headed with ”advanced 3-D gesture-based technology controls” and driving dynamics that are sportier than in past Hyundai vehicles.
To a degree, Hyundai has already moved away from its roots as a budget-car builder with more luxurious, expensive models like the Genesis and Equus sedans. However, those cars have failed to place the Korean brand in the same league as BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz in the eyes of many drivers.
The company plans to unveil the HCD-14 at 3 pm EST on Jan. 14.
